Some AU-y type thing scene ... yes.
Albus' brother, James, has a girlfriend.
Like - an actual girlfriend: not the bird-girl he doesn't like, and not Cora.
This, to him, is the strangest concept of all - that Cora isn't James' girlfriend.
They practically spend all of their time joined at the hip; at least that's how Albus sees it. Which is probably why it seems a little strange to him to find Cora in his bedroom when he steps in.
"... erm. Hi, Cora."
[note: James is 18, Albus and Cora are 17 - both in their last years of school. James works in his uncle's shop for now, which is how he came to meet Gwen Copplestone.]

It might.
And she really doesn't want things to be weird. James is pretty much the focal point for her. Everything else is weird. She doesn't know if she could handle him being weird on her.
"And I think he likes the excitin' parts," she adds. "The beginnin' parts. Most of the girls? They tend t'get gone after those wear off."
no subject
"Maybe that's - um. Because he can never get to that level of comfort he's looking for?"
Honestly, this is a little beyond Albus' expertise. But he will make a good and honest effort to be helpful.
"And you'll never really know unless you talked to him about it. It might get weird, yes, but ... honestly, it's James. He's never really weird about things."
Beat.
"Or maybe it's actually that he's weird about everything because he's just ... weird himself."
Albus grins a little.

This is going way above either of their pay grade. She can answer Albus, but the idea of talking to anybody else about it makes her feel jangly and vaguely swimmy in the head. It's not really all that nice.
"Or he could just be really nice about it an' do that thing where he wrecks my hair like m'still six."
She laughs, "But it's okay. Honest. And Gwen's pretty. And nice. And your mum likes her. It's good when your mum likes her!"
no subject
He does like Gwen, he does.
But ...
He shrugs.
"I don't know," he says with a little bit of a sigh. "She just doesn't seem like ... the permanent sort, I suppose.
"You know?
"Like, I can't quite imagine calling her sister."
no subject
A little while longer than usual, at least.
"An' anyway, you don't have to," she chirps, shifting again to bump their shoulders together. "Y'can just call her Gwen. S'nice. All one syllable and everything."
Easy-peasy.

Stalling. The fancy way.
"Maybe she'll feel all sistery if she sticks around that long?"
She kinda hopes not. In that stupid, selfish sort of way that she isn't all that fond of. Which, yeah - she'll have to work on that.

He isn't entirely sure himself, and at this very moment in time, he's not sure he wants to figure that bit out.
It's the tragedy of not getting to see his two favourite people (though the 'favourite' part is vaguely arguable) get together.
"So, um. So you're not going to say anything?"
no subject
Seems awkward. And stupid.
And she's awkward and stupid enough with this sort of stuff already. No need to add to it unnecessarily.
no subject
It's a little difficult to properly take in all of the circumstances, especially when his brother is one of the people in question in this particular situation.
"I ... suppose it depends."
no subject
"M'asking you stupid questions now." A snort. "Like some sorta - Like a baby. Or one'a those stupid girls in those ridiculous movies people go to when they wanna neck in private. Y'know, when they're still livin' with their parents."
no subject
Albus actually has no idea what she's talking about, having never seen one of those 'ridiculous movies people go to when they wanna neck in private'. Sadly, this is the life of a wizard in the Wizarding World who prefers the company of a Dickens or Thackeray novel.
"Stupid questions are all right," he assures her. "And anyway, I don't really think they're stupid at all. How else will you discover things if you don't ask questions?"
no subject
Only viable way of doing things, really. All scientific and stuff. Not that she has any plans of trialing or (particularly) erroring anytime in the future. Especially when it comes to the matter currently being discussed.
no subject
"Um. Well, if that's your preferred plan of action," he says, shaking his head. "But usually - well, usually people go for the asking of questions."
He gives her a smile.
"If it helps at all, um. I really don't think my brother would react horribly. And you'll still have me."
no subject
Her lips curl themselves upward during his speech, fingers twitching in her lap for a moment in some (increasingly futile) attempt at restraint. She always tries with Albus. Sometimes it doesn't work. This is one of those times.
As far as warning signs go, there's this gleeful little noise followed by near-immediate pouncing - arms twisted around his neck, nose up under his chin, and a stream of delighted babbling affections.
no subject
Not that Albus minds so much, in the end. He's not as outwardly affectionate as his older brother might be (particularly with Cora), but he really does adore Cora.
His arms wrap around her too, to give her a quick hug - and to steady himself from falling over from sudden impact.
He laughs again.
no subject
A wide grin.
"All fawning and admiration. Girls throwin' favours and swoonin' and stuff."
no subject
It's all really rather impressive.
"Well - um. No." He shakes his head, smiling bashfully. "No, they don't. I don't know that I'd - um. Particularly deal well with the attention either."
no subject
It really is impressive, however. Like something painted in neon-markers.
"They should," she says like a secret, - grin widening, wolfish and elaborately faux-flirty. It slides across her face like a joke, laughter-soaked and overdone. "I mean, I would."
no subject
Not that they would.
School has always been something of a confusing atmosphere with the teasing and the ignoring and the also feeling like a second home.
It's ... complicated.
no subject
She smiles instead, tipping her head to rest neatly on his shoulder, "They'd be lucky t'have you around to call awesome, Albus. Don't know what they're missin' out on."
no subject
He is so not going to stop being red in the face for a while, is he?
