honourbyname: (run that one by me again?)

Some AU-y type thing scene ... yes.

Albus' brother, James, has a girlfriend.

Like - an actual girlfriend: not the bird-girl he doesn't like, and not Cora.

This, to him, is the strangest concept of all - that Cora isn't James' girlfriend.

They practically spend all of their time joined at the hip; at least that's how Albus sees it. Which is probably why it seems a little strange to him to find Cora in his bedroom when he steps in.

"... erm. Hi, Cora."

[note: James is 18, Albus and Cora are 17 - both in their last years of school. James works in his uncle's shop for now, which is how he came to meet Gwen Copplestone.]

"It's like - What's it?" she wiggles her fingers. "Crossin' that bridge when we come to it? That's how it goes, yeah?"

Stalling. The fancy way.

"Maybe she'll feel all sistery if she sticks around that long?"

She kinda hopes not. In that stupid, selfish sort of way that she isn't all that fond of. Which, yeah - she'll have to work on that.

"Nah," she shrugs, still pressed all close. (Instinctive comfort-seeking. Contact-seeking.) "I mean, would you?"

Seems awkward. And stupid.

And she's awkward and stupid enough with this sort of stuff already. No need to add to it unnecessarily.

Cora shakes her head like somebody remembering something - a cobwebby sort of motion, all gummy and sticky and two-hours ago.

"M'asking you stupid questions now." A snort. "Like some sorta - Like a baby. Or one'a those stupid girls in those ridiculous movies people go to when they wanna neck in private. Y'know, when they're still livin' with their parents."

"Trial an' error?"

Only viable way of doing things, really. All scientific and stuff. Not that she has any plans of trialing or (particularly) erroring anytime in the future. Especially when it comes to the matter currently being discussed.

"Better at the jumpin' straight in and trying not to get too many bruises. Nobody needs an emotional shiner. Ain't even halfway pretty."

Her lips curl themselves upward during his speech, fingers twitching in her lap for a moment in some (increasingly futile) attempt at restraint. She always tries with Albus. Sometimes it doesn't work. This is one of those times.

As far as warning signs go, there's this gleeful little noise followed by near-immediate pouncing - arms twisted around his neck, nose up under his chin, and a stream of delighted babbling affections.

"D'people tell you that you're awesome a lot?" she inquires, threading her arm through his in a somewhat more sedate expression of intense affection. "Cause they really should. Constant-like."

A wide grin.

"All fawning and admiration. Girls throwin' favours and swoonin' and stuff."

Aw, but it's kinda cute.

It really is impressive, however. Like something painted in neon-markers.

"They should," she says like a secret, - grin widening, wolfish and elaborately faux-flirty. It slides across her face like a joke, laughter-soaked and overdone. "I mean, I would."

Cora resists the James-like urge to go for the instinctual pun. Albus' face is quite spectacularly bright already - and she's never been quite as good with the fine art of the double-entendre anyway. Sometimes it's for the best that these things be left to the experts.

She smiles instead, tipping her head to rest neatly on his shoulder, "They'd be lucky t'have you around to call awesome, Albus. Don't know what they're missin' out on."
